Signs and symptoms of schizophrenia

Before discussing strategies to help manage the effects of schizophrenia, it is important to understand key aspects of the illness. You might already know a lot about schizophrenia, but sometimes a refresher doesn’t hurt! 




Executive functioning

Many people with schizophrenia experience cognitive challenges as a part of the illness—difficulties with attention, memory and the range of functions that fall under the term “executive.” This section focuses on executive functions, including the ability to plan and carry out a specific task, be flexible in how we think, and monitor our own progress on tasks and activities.




Cognitive adaptation training

This section introduces Cognitive Adaptation Training (CAT) and environmental supports.
